Washington does not have restrictions on the usage of its alternate routes with regard to subject, grade or geographic areas. However, the state requires districts and approved program providers to give priority to individuals who are seeking certification in subject matter shortage areas or shortages due to geographic locations.
Washington passed new legislation in March 2010 that requires the Professional Educator Standards Board to revise program review standards to include community colleges, school districts and non-higher education providers. Washington is commended for revising its policy to allow a diversity of providers. A good diversity of providers helps all programs, both university- and non-university-based, to improve.
