Retaining Effective Teachers Policy
North Carolina requires that all new teachers receive mentoring. The state mandates that all new teachers participate in a mentoring program for the first three years of employment. Mentors are to be assigned as soon as possible after employment, and it is expected that they will share experience in a subject matter similar to that of the new teacher. It is up to the State Board to coordinate the mentor training program as well as to "develop criteria for selecting excellent, experienced, and qualified teachers to be participants in the mentor training program." A regular survey and evaluation process to assess the program's effectiveness is mandatory.
