Kudos also to Michigan state senator Jud Gilbert (R-Algonac) for proposing a bill that may offer a model to school districts around the country which get left in a lurch when teachers quit late in the summer to take another teaching job. Under the proposed bill, teachers who leave after July 1 or during the school year will need to get permission from the district that they are leaving before another district in the state is allowed to hire them, Generally teachers face no repercussions for quitting at the last minute since the only option is for a district to take a teacher to court for violating a contract, something districts aren't eager to do. The Michigan Education Association is against the bill--its solution is to have better pay for teachers--while some teachers are opposed to legislation that limits their right to work. Our take is that a deadline is a deadline.
