Back in December, we ran a story on a study of Teach For America teachers in Los Angeles that was sponsored by the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. There was a good deal of ambiguity about which teachers constituted the experimental group and which the control, ambiguity which we thought we resolved after contacting the researcher directly. Apparently we still didn't get it right and here are the facts as we now understand them: Based on a sample of second-year and alumni TFA and non-TFA teachers in LAUSD, Teach For America teachers were found to have significantly higher student achievement gains than their traditionally certified peers. These effects are significant when compared with "early career" teachers and veteran teachers alike.
