Dig into the Research: Teacher licensure, student achievement, and the edTPA

See all posts

The edTPA is the most widely used performance assessment for aspiring teachers, required by eight states and an option in another 10. The purpose of performance assessments, like the edTPA, is to establish a common language and standard for pre-service teacher preparation. But, what impact does the implementation of the edTPA as a requirement for licensure have on new teacher supply? And, does the edTPA really improve the quality of new teachers?

A recent working paper, Teacher Licensing, Teacher Supply, and Student Achievement: Nationwide Implementation of edTPA, claims to offer the first causal evidence about the effects of edTPA on teacher supply and student outcomes. In this recorded conversation, NCTQ President Kate Walsh discusses the findings with a panel of expert researchers in teacher preparation, including the paper's two authors.
